Don't get me wrong, Christmas break is great. In my opinion, it comes at the perfect time in the school year. You start out, way back in September, with the hub-bub of the schoolday morning. You rise, wake the sleepy children and set out on your quest to get yourself and your not-very-happy-to-be-dragged-out-of-bed children through the regiment of hair brushing, showers, breakfast, snack-making, backpack loading, snowpants/coats/boots/hats/mittens/etc. donned.....all in a matter of 30 or so minutes. You do this day, after day, after day, until you're about ready to say 'the heck with it all!'
Then comes the glorious Christmas break. You get to slow down from the everyday chaos of getting kids off to school before the sun rises. You get to enjoy your family, spend some quality time with your children, reacquaint your self with who they really are when they're not yelling for you to find their lost mitten because the bus is coming around the corner. It's quite refreshing.
We had 18 days of break this year. 18 days of quality time & re acquaintance. And now we're back into the chaotic schoolday morning routine. After 18 days, though, the idea of getting back into the routine becomes strangely refreshing and enjoyable. All four of the kids are in school today and that leaves me wondering: what do I do now? Where do I start? What next? I have the next 2.5 hours to myself....what now?
I have plenty of housework to do, that's for sure. But for the next 2.5 hours I think I'll..........just go. Just be me. Just be.
I'm going to head out on Hwy 10 and go to Kohls/Target/Walmart/JCPenney's/Caribou. Maybe all of them, maybe some of them, maybe none of them. I may just drive and enjoy my favorite cd until I have to turn around & head back home. Whatever happens, I'm thankful for the 18 days of Christmas break that I got to have with my kids. And I'm thankful for the fact that they're all in school right now, giving me some much needed freedom! ;)
Now, my van is warming up so I better go somewhere fast, before I asphyxiate the cute little mouse that's hunkered down for the winter under the step in our garage.
